Repurposed Antique Radio

Welcome back!  Todays article is about a repurposed antique console radio set I spotted.  Unlike todays ultra modern televisions and entertainment centers with their gloss black plastic and stainless steel finishes the appliances of the 1930's & 40's had real style and were made to the same exacting standards as a fine piece of furniture.  Unfortunately with all technology it changes rapidly and quickly becomes outdated and when it breaks is difficult or sometimes impossible to repair after time.

Hence todays piece is on an antique console radio I spotted on a buy sell group and it is stunning while giving what would be destined for the landfill a second lease on life.  Keep following as I have plans for a console radio project in the near future.

With the original circuit board and vacuum tubes removed there is plenty of room for storing wine glasses; all the while retaining the charm of the original radio.

And where the speaker used to reside is now a functional wine rack.  I would love to do one of these only have a modern radio incorporated into it so it still plays the classics.

Victoria Sandwich Cake Recipe (Gluten Free)

Welcome back!  If you watch baking shows or follow recipe posts on Facebook you may have come across a Victoria Sandwich.  As a Canadian I was like what is this?  Well after a little research I found this is a traditional snack for an English tea; a delicious yellow sponge cake with strawberry jam and a rich buttercream filling.  Sounds great right!  So to make sure I had the real Victoria Sandwich recipe and not a colonialist version I did a little searching and came across this one by King Arthur Flour in the UK.  And I must say it turned out delicious, you will have to give this one a try and most of the ingredients are pretty common to most households.

Recipe

Cake:
3/4 cup unsalted butter (at room temperature)
3/4 cup + 2 Tablespoons sugar
3 Extra Large eggs (at room temperature)
1 teaspoon vanilla extract *
1/4 teaspoon almond extract * (I chose to omit this one)
1 1/2 cups unbleached all purpose flour (or a good Gluten Free alternative)

*Not used in the Classic Recipe but King Arthur Flour noted it improved the flavour so I went with Vanilla.

Filling:
3/4 cup good quality (I used homemade) strawberry jam
3/4 cup heavy whipping cream
1/2 teaspoon vanilla extract
2 tablespoons granulated sugar
2 tablespoons simple syrup or flavoured syrup of your choice (I omitted this because it already tasted delicious and didn't need anything more)

1.  Preheat your oven to 350 degrees Fahrenheit and prepare (2) 8" round cake pans.  A good trick is I cut circles of parchment out to fit in the bottom and then spray the pans with non stick spray.
2. In a medium bowl, use an electric beater to beat together the butter and the sugar until it is well combined and smooth and creamy.
3.  Next beat in the eggs one at a time scraping the sides of the bowl down after each one is added.
4.  Add the vanilla extract and beat into the mixture.
5.  Add the flour, a beat gently on low until the mixture is well combined.  The consistency is fairly thick and dense, not runny.  I made this recipe Gluten Free so I used a good reliable gluten free flour mix from Metro's Selection Brand that has Xanthum gum already added.
6.  Next is divide the batter up between the two prepared cake pans.  This can be a trick because of how sticky the batter is and I also tried to distribute it evenly around the pans.

7.  Bake the cakes for 20 minutes or until you notice the cake starts to pull away from the edges of the pan.  Remove them from the oven when done and let cool for a couple minutes before tipping them out onto a cooling rack.
8.  Once the cakes are cool place the first one on a plate and spread a good layer of strawberry jam over the top of the cake.  A good trick I learned was to put this layer in the fridge while you make the buttercream as it makes it easier to spread the buttercream over it.
9.  Now to make the buttercream filling.  Pour your 3/4 cup heavy cream into a mixing bowl and sprinkle it with the 2 tablespoons of sugar and then begin beating it with the electric mixer.  It takes a couple minutes of beating on high before you will see it thicken where the cream will stand on it's own.  Keep going I learned to take it on my second time making this recipe to take it until the buttercream resembles more of an icing consistency.

10.  Spread the buttercream in a generous layer over the jam and then place the top layer on the cake.

11.  If desired decorate with a strawberry or other fruit and sprinkle with confectioners sugar before serving.

12.  I then refrigerated the cake for a couple hours before cutting and placing on a tiered serving tray (see tomorrows article for our Victorian Tea)

A helpful hint when cutting the cake, use a serrated bread knife and use a sawing motion rather than just pushing down to cut it to avoid squishing the filling out.

And I wish to thank King Arthur Flour for the great recipe find:

Enjoy!! I know I will this Victoria Day and I will post pictures tomorrow of our Victorian tea.

Happy Victoria Day!!!

Wishing Everyone a Safe & Happy Victoria Day!

Pressed Flower Follow-up and Mother's Day Card Results!

Hello and welcome back! I had intended to post this a little earlier this week, but hopefully a few of you out there did compare and test the two flower pressing techniques for yourself after Apr. 24's Flower Pressing Tutorial/Craft article.

Here is a step by step unveiling of the same bouquet of flowers pressed with the old-fashioned book-press method:

So, as you can see... this looks like a complete disaster when only given a quick glance... BUT, the colour is well preserved and the petals dried well so not all hope is lost! This looks like a great one-of-a-kind Mother's Day card supply! Be sure to check later in the article for some ways to salvage this!

This one turned out much better and would look great in a double sided glass frame as used in the other method of flower pressing!

The little purple flowers are just as vibrant as they were 3 weeks ago when they were pressed!

Some greenery and one last pressed flower for our Mother's Day Projects!

So here is where I must apologize and repeat the same thing I'm sure you have heard somewhere before (hint, hint: Mother's Day): "Don't expect success while only taking shortcuts".

Here is "the proof in the pudding", a comparison of the Iron-Press Flower and Traditional tried and true Book Press method after 3 weeks time:

On your above left is the Iron Press Method I tested last month; however I believe I made the mistake of using parchment paper, which is not absorbant PLUS I believe I should have spent quite a bit more time ironing!

On your above right are the final results of the good old-fashioned book-press and time method.

I will stress: USE ABSORBANT PAPER not parchment as I did... I did have one larger flower that was in such a bad state it didn't make it to the photography step (as I was gagging at the smell of mould and sticky flower gunk!!)

I think the first thought that comes to mind when I see these side by side is: "Good things come to those who wait" among many many other quotes relating to taking shortcuts when expecting success.

Sam's Ramblings Note:

I believe this method comparison really makes a bold statement for antiques. As Brooks said in The Shawshank Redemption: "The world went and got itself into a big d*** hurry".
These days, most household decor and furniture is mass produced and takes little human effort to make. Now that the world is in such a hurry, manufacturing has turned to quantity instead of quality. Antiques truly are proof that when time and effort are put into a project/furniture/anything the results stand the test of time and are tried and true. Work hard- make it happen.

Do you remember that I mentioned Mother's Day cards?

Materials: Spray Lacquer, Dried Flowers, Super Glue, Card Stock Paper, Printer (optional)

Directions:
1. Quick spray-shellac of your dried, pressed flowers and time to dry.
2. Follow instructions on crazy glue, I used single used packets from the dollar store.. be sure to wear gloves! This is NOT a step that is kidlet-friendly!
3. Arrange petals, I tried to be creative and make some of the purple petals appear to be floating away... I believe here is where I must admit that I'm not the most artistic person on the planet... but I believe many of you out there can do a much better job in a pinch!
4. I opted to hand-write a personal message on the inside.

TIP: Due to the delicate nature of this card, I would NOT suggest an envelope.

Thanks for reading this longer than usual article! I hope to have another blog up in the next few hours on another Mother's Day Series Project that is a great last-minute homemade gift idea so simple even small children can take part and the ingredients can be found primarily in your kitchen or dried good or baking supply or grocery store.

In The Attic: Samovar

Hello Everyone and welcome back to this week's "In The Attic" article and I am sure you are all wondering what is a "Samovar"?  I am glad you asked because this weeks article started while on my tour of the Barrie Antique Centre earlier this week (see Wednesdays post) when I came across this interesting metal pot (ok we are going to use that loosely) amongst a dish set.
The metal Samovar can be seen in the upper right corner and is the decorative brass coloured pot with the spigot.
After doing a bit of research based on the tag, I discovered that a Samovar is a traditional Russian metal container that is used to heat and boil water.  The word "Samovar" actually means self-brewer. Intrigued as to how this found it's way to Barrie, Ontario of all places further research revealed that although traditionally Russian the influence spread to most of Eastern Europe and the Middle East.
How the original ones work is the central body which holds the water has a pipe that runs through the centre.  This centre pipe would then be filled with fuel, either coal or oil and ignited there by heating the water.  Many Samovars also would have a ring around the top chimney where a smaller teapot would sit to brew a super concentrated tea called zavarka.  This would then be diluted from the heated water from the main body, the ratio being 10:1.

For you tea lovers out there that like a strong cup of tea this may just be for you!

Antique Samovars are prized collector items as they quite often feature very decorative metal work, I will definitely have to keep my out for more of these in the future.

How this particular one ended up in Simcoe County, Ontario I am not sure perhaps immigrants from Eastern Europe after WW2 or even after? If anyone knows more info about the use of a Samovar I would like to hear from you email me at: Samantha@lakecountrycollectables.com and as always, I'm taking submissions for In the Attic and Repurpose/Upcycled projects!

Thanks for reading and have a great weekend, fellow antique lovers!

Mothers Day - Silver Polishing Tips

Hi and welcome back.
As our continuing Mothers Day series I wanted to share a How To video I did on polishing silver.  I hope you enjoy and if you have some other tips you have found please share by sending them to Samantha@lakecountrycollectables.com and I may add them to a future article.

This may be a great idea if Mom has some tarnished silver in the drawer; you could clean them up for her or if shopping for that special silver item don't be discouraged you can always make it sparkling.

Check back this Friday for another "In the Attic" article.
See you then.

Touring the Barrie Antique Centre for Mothers Day Gift Ideas

Good morning antique lovers!
Today as part of my Mothers Day series I will take you on a tour of the Barrie Antique Centre, in Barrie, ON, Canada to search for some great gift ideas for Mom.  If you have visited this mall before you will have likely heard that they are closing their doors for good June 30, 2019, but there are still many great deals to be found.
Shortly after entering the mall on the first floor I spotted this great 1950's "Mad Men" style 2 Piece Suit for Just $65 and it was even in a size 6-8.
As you come in the front door you instantly recognize that you are going to be here for awhile, with 3 floors of vendors you can easily get lost.  Not that getting lost amongst tons of great antiques would be a bad thing.  Then only a few short foot steps in the next booth I spotted a wealth of antique records and phonographs and this book which would make a wonderful conversation piece as a coffee table book.

Just $20.00!
Next I travelled through the lower floor and no visit is complete without visiting the "Room" if you watched yesterdays video this is the room I speak of.  Taken from an English Country House the panelled room is now on sale for $28,000 and the vendor jokes "Spend $10,000 and receive a Free Coffee" - I just need to win the lottery as I love this room.  See Tuesdays video because a photo doesn't do it justice.

Next find was this great plate which was very summery, I loved the colours and I can picture this looking great hung on the wall of the kitchen to add a great splash of colour.
1980's vintage decorative plate $39

Then it was onward and upward to the second floor of the mall; where I found many more great buys for Mom including this great corner shelf unit.  Many parents are downsizing so furniture purchases can be tricky but I spotted this great corner shelf unit that would be great.
And for the Mom who collects China I also eyed this beautiful dish set which would look stunning when entertaining.
A 6 place setting Myott England dish set for $145 that had a wonderful Art Deco look.
Next on my tour I found a treasure trove of vintage bicycles, what Mom couldn't resist going for a ride this spring on a cool vintage bike.
Continuing my walk through the second floor I next came across this converted work table which would make a great centre island in a kitchen.  It has a wonderful look to it and would make a great work surface complete with the centre area to add decorative items or even everyday items you use to cook.
This unique workbench table was priced at $1100 but many of the booths are offering discounts so if you were in the market for Mom or yourself for a great kitchen island now would be the time to go.
And then I cam across this next great find, I instantly thought of "Tweety Bird" coming across this Art Deco style bird cage and stand.
Art Deco bird cage just $120.

Next I found some great décor items including a retro looking floor lamp and other much older items.  For the more modern décor vintage lighting is in now, and if Mom has a newer look then this light may be for her.

On my tour there were so many items and you could spend so much time this article doesn't have enough room but I will include a few more items I found in my tour.
Vintage lamp just $25

This was interesting it was a tapestry / wall screen divider, I didn't see a price on this one but what a unique piece to divide up a room without closing in the space completely.

Amazing Art Deco lamp, at first it looked like a wall sconce but it is actually a table lamp; priced at $135.
This ends my tour of the Barrie Antique Centre, I was exhausted .... But hey you said there were 3 floors what happened to the third floor.  Well this is a Mothers Day series, so all I can say is the 3rd floor is more for Dad with some super cool garage collectables for the perfect man cave.

The Barrie Antique Centre is located at 272 Innisfil St., Barrie, ON Canada and remember it is all done June 30th, 2019 so act fast to get some great gifts for Mothers Day.

Make sure to check back tomorrow for my next post.
