This Week: A 1940s Hand-Formed Victrola Cream Slag Glass Table Lamp.
This stunning Victrola Slag Glass lamp was purchased at auction in Lindsay, Ontario this past year. The lamp was rewired around the 1980s and I assume that is when the piece of slag glass was removed or otherwise lost/broken, although it does seem handy to replace the bulbs. Picture of lamp with bulb on below:
I want to note that the piece that is meant to look like the needle of the Victrola actually swings on and off as though It actually worked- brilliant added detail! There seems to be missing a circular (record-like) object on the base as shown in the next picture (This one also has some tape gunk as shown):
The next picture is of the inside of the horn. Notice the mesh over the bulb and how the seams for each metal part of the horns were hand-formed. Absolutely quality workmanship!
Now, I've done a little research and it seems the lamps come in Cream, Red, or Green Slag Glass. Some of the following links are what I have found all from the US except one in Mexico:
As you can see in the links and varied price tags attached, they are in decent condition for age and seemingly rare. There is a light in the base as well, by the way! Mine seems to work, but only one mention of that in the links I found.
As a music lover, I fell in love all over again with this piece (as any antique lover would know this is a common state while hunting!). I then found I had more questions if anyone out there can help?
1) Where was this item originally manufactured? By whom?
2) What did the circular (possibly a record) object on the base look like?
3) Is the metal a form of brass?
I also wonder how this item got to Lindsay, Ontario? Hmmm... How wonderful it is to daydream about such an excellent find!
That's it for this week! What's in YOUR attic?
