Welcome back Antique Lovers!

I just wanted to share with you my visit today of the Barrie Antique Centre, in Barrie, ON, Canada.  If you have visited this mall you have likely heard the sad news that they will be closing their doors June 30, 2019. So as part of my Mother's Day series I did a tour and here is just a teaser of what is coming in tomorrows post.

See you tomorrow!

Upcycled Projects: Dyola Brand General Store Counter Display Turned into a Radio circa 1930s! Local Find Bonus Edition!

Front of Repurposed Dyola Radio
This week's Upcycle/Repurpose Project was actually a DIY project roughly around the 1930s. It was a local submission from a vendor at Antiques on 11 mall near Orillia, Ontario. Priced at $150
It was originally a Dy-O-La home and fabric dye general store display cabinet (commercial product display/early advertising memorabilia). Sometime around the 1930s, someone repurposed it into a "modern" (at the time) radio using a home mail order kit which were popular at the time. The 1930s (also the decade of the Great Depression) were known for their genius repurposing and DIY projects due to the financial crisis occurring at the time.

Here are some ebay listings of similar Dy-O-La cabinets (albeit not repurposed like this great find!):

Here are some other pictures of it:

Happy Easter Monday and Happy Antiquing, my friends! Stay tuned weekly for more Upcycled/Repurposed/Refinishing of antiques coming your way!

In The Attic: Wright Kay & Co Quadruple Plated Silver Candelabra

Hello Everyone and welcome back to this week's "In The Attic" article. This week we have a neat find I picked up here in Simcoe County. It is a Wright Kay & Co Quadruple plated silver candelabra with 5 twisted arms and a beaded silver accents and is pattern number 578. It is VERY heavy!!

I did a little research on the history of Wright Kay & Co and they were a well known jeweller in Detroit, Michigan, USA and occupied a building at 1500 Woodward Ave in Detroit's historic district. The business was in operation between 1886-1978. This specific Today, the building is a mix of residential, a clothing store and this namesake Wright & Company Restaurant.

Here are a few different pictures I got with the candelabra. And, YES- for you china experts out there that china place setting is by Ridgway of Staffordshire, England in "Country Days" pattern!

Mother's Day Series: Homemade Flower Pressing Craft with Video Tutorial!

Hello Everyone and Happy Wednesday! Today we are going to do a neat Mother's Day craft and gift idea: Flowers dried and pressed in glass, perfect for any mom's home décor! Today we have a whole smorgasbord including pictures, written directions and a short video!

So firstly, for advice I looked up a how-to article on Better Homes and Gardens website which has both the iron method and long-wait book pressing we are comparing in today's blog: HERE

I will mention, DO NOT use parchment paper like I did as it is not absorbent enough!

I started by layering flowers between cut pieces of paper and pressing with heavy books as seen below:

For this method you will need the space for a pile of heavy books for 2-3 weeks!!

Be sure to check back in 2 weeks for the end result of the book-pressed flower drying method!

Here is a short video how-to of the iron-press flower method:

I will say, I could have easily ironed for at least another few minutes, but we will see how it turns out in a few weeks. Here is the end result of the iron-pressed flower method:

Be sure to keep an eye out for the follow up on this great Mother's Day Gift Craft!!!

Have a great day and thank you for visiting Samantha's Lake Country Collectables!!! As always, be sure to check out my Etsy Store for more great Mother's Day Gift Ideas!

Local Finds: Mother's Day Gift Ideas found in Ontario's Lake Country!

Happy Tuesday and welcome back to my site; today we are doing local finds for upcoming Mother's Day gifts.  I want to share with you some of the great items I found while visiting a local antique mall near me 'Antiques on 11' just north of Orillia, Ontario, Canada.

The mall has a great selection of vendors from refined traditional items, shabby chic, collectables, rustic furniture and vintage clothing.  Surely you will be able to find something great for Mom.

Here are just a few of the items I found on my recent visit.

Retro Polka Dot dress in a popular Ladies Size 8 listed for just $59.00
What Mom wouldn't like a tea trolley for her deck or porch for serving drinks or afternoon tea.  This one was just $75 and had a glass cover to protect the finish.

Or for the Mom on the go this 1950's Vintage Sunshine Ballontine that was ready for bike riding season for $199

Wonderful metal Peacocks - Wow just $15 for 6 of them at booth H-3.
These would make such a great decorative display for a feature wall.
I found lots of wonderful home décor items also which would make great affordable and truly unique gifts for Mother's Day.

An Original Oil painting for $40 at W-3 with a wonderful Spring Tulip theme.
A really unique Victorian Toll art in an intricately carved display frame for $150 in C-169.
Or what Mom couldn't use this really unique Iron wine rack.
Just $34 at booth L-3co
Wine not Mom's thing, then how about this super unique vintage coffee pot.
With a starburst glass bottom and triangular pot a truly unique gift and just
$35.00 at booth R-3.

A wonderful vintage Quilt, this was just one of the many that were
available on our tour through the mall.
$65 for the set is quite the deal.
A great 1920-30s corner china cabinet at W-3 for just $150.

I had a great tour through the local mall, and the staff and vendors at Antiques on 11 were amazing and super friendly.  There was literally something there for all budgets and I really enjoyed just walking through and learning some of the history of some items.  So next time you are in Ontario's Lake Country make sure to visit Antiques on 11 North Mall.

Good Friday and Easter Wishes From Samantha's Lake Country Collectables

I spotted this pretty Easter display near Orillia, Ontario and couldn't help but share! I don't know why I didn't make this connection in Tuesday's blog article, but what says spring and Easter like the beautiful cheery colours of depression/uranium/oatmeal/vaseline glass?

The Easter and spring traditions are about a time of gathering and rejoicing, be it for the resurrection or for the time of rebirth. It is a time when colour, light, and life returns from the bleak, cold, heartless darkness of winter. Easter is a time of gathering and rejoicing in the name of Christ, whom died for our sins and was resurrected on this most holy of holiday weekends.

I would like to take this opportunity to wish everyone a very safe and happy Good Friday and Easter weekend. Enjoy time with family, friends, and community- take pictures to tell your unique history- laugh, love; but remain thankful for this gift we call life!

In The Attic: Antique Book- We by Charles Lindbergh

You never know what treasures are hiding In The Attic (or basement for that matter!). Every Friday, In The Attic will feature a treasure I find on the hunt or will share from other antique lovers who have questions about or find something interesting in research. Feel free to comment or email if you would like YOUR neat finds featured! Samantha@lakecountrycollectables.com
This week in In The Attic (a day early as to preserve the upcoming long holiday weekend) to acknowledge the bibliophiles amongst us. If you knew me well enough to have ever been in my home, you'd know that I believe one thing defines a home- BOOKS! Although, it is with great remorse that I cannot have an unlimited library like some sort of Disney's Belle-like princess...I'm quite happy to collect what antique books that I AM able to find and this week's feature is one of them along with the ongoing questions you'll soon come to know me by!

So this week is a 1st edition, 4th impression of the 1927 Charles Lindbergh book "We"... a story of his flight across the Atlantic, released within just 57 days after the historic flight took place and including his beliefs at the time of the future of aviation!

Here are some online links to this common antique book!

As you can see, they are not worth a whole lot due to the fact that it was basically an all-time bestseller of its' day! But think about it: television and internet haven't been invented yet- our main source of such amazing life experiences was based off reading of authors whom excelled in their field.

Now, as for history on this piece, at the time of purchase it was a reasonable investment based on background research of the book (around 2013)...at that point the book wasn't widely available via this global marketplace and product value was high. It was purchased in Coldwater, Ontario from Kijiji for my personal collection but stems the following questions:

1) How many hours have we lost in this current society of educational-based reading
2) Why can't I find another 1st edition 4th impression or earlier impression?

I believe my research skills might need some help!!

As always, I'm looking for features and audience contributions of what neat finds you have! Be sure to email your finds and questions to Samantha@lakecountrycollectables.com

Thanks for reading and stay tuned for next weeks "In The Attic" unique finds!

Local Last Minute: Easter Antique Edition

I would like to introduce a new weekly headliner blog article entitled "Local Last Minute" which will include items from local Ontario antique malls, flea markets and last minute LOCAL antique finds to meet every need and occasion! Ordering online isn't for everyone but there are a vast number of antique lovers and vendors retiring due to lack of space and an aging population which makes this weekly feature ever so relevant as a way to keep the local Simcoe County antique mall industry alive in the minds of current and coming generations. History is what we leave behind to show how we lived this gift of life.

Lots of great last-minute unique Easter gift ideas, décor, holiday entertaining artifacts- and of course the reason why I love antique shopping so much: Conversation pieces! In case you were asking: What does Simcoe County have to offer of our heritage this week?

Here are some items I spotted at Antiques on 11 North Mall, just North of Orillia on Highway 11 (See links and pics at bottom for location and social media for more great finds!):
